Why adopt?

By choosing to adopt you are not only saving the life of the pet you are adopting, but will make room for another animal in need. You are essentially giving 2 dogs a second chance. Shelters are full of healthy, sweet, and smart animals that made their way as strays or were surrendered. These animals did not make this choice. Choosing to adopt from a rescue or shelter is an act of kindness and love.

Our Adoption Process

Most of our adoptable pets live in foster homes, so in order to meet them you need to apply. Complete an application for the animal you are interested in. You will hear from us in 7-10 days about the next steps. Please take the time to review our Adoption Policies below prior to applying.
Approved applications are sent to the foster home. They will be in touch with you to answer any questions you have and tell you more about the pet. If interested, they will schedule a meet and greet with the pet. Your meet and greet will be scheduled at a time and place convenient to you and the foster homes.
Congratulations!! Adoption fees are due at this time. You will be sent home with the pet’s folder which includes; medical records, the pet’s bio and microchip information. We will follow up with you after the adoption to make sure things are going smoothly. We appreciate you choosing to adopt and want you to know we offer continued support for you and your new family member.

Detailed Adoption Policies

Once the application is received, the approval process will take approximately 1-3 business days and you will be contacted as soon as it is completed. As a part of the approval process:  (1) we verify home ownership or get approval from your landlord. We do this because one of the top 10 reasons animals are surrendered is “landlord does not allow pets”, and (2) we also check on a working relationship with a veterinarian for any currently or previously owned pets. This shows us your intent to provide any needed medical attention for the new pet and that you will comply with state and local ordinances. Please call your vet and give them permission to release information from your pet (s) records to us. (3) A home check is required prior to final approval of your application.

We will require:

  1. that all adults living in the household have given their consent to adopt an animal.
  2. that you have a valid ID with current address,
  3. that you live within the state of Wisconsin, and within the Southeastern and Central regions of the state. Final approval will be dependent on where the animal is being fostered and the availability of the foster family to drive to the applicant.
  4. that you be at least 25 years of age.
  5. that your household has no one under the age of 4.
  6. All pets currently in your home are current on shots, spayed/neutered, must be annually heartworm tested and kept on heartworm preventatives year round
  7. Any previously owned pets must have been kept current on shots, spayed/neutered, and were heartworm tested annually and kept on heartworm preventatives year round, and,
  8. You have never surrendered an animal to a shelter or rehomed an animal.

  • Application Review – Your application will be reviewed. You will receive a response via email whether your application is approved or denied. Please note we may not specify why an application is denied/which criteria was not met.
  • Home Based Meet & Greet – After the application has been approved, a Home Based Meet & Greet will be done by a Ma, Paws, & Me Pet Rescue Representative. This is to provide the opportunity for the dog and adopter to interact in a home-based environment and make sure it’s a good fit for both the dog and the new family.
  • Contract and Paperwork – If the meet and greet goes well and is deemed a good fit, we will move forward with the adoption contract which details our policies and procedures regarding the Ma, Paws, & Me Pet Rescue dog. You will be given a copy of the adoption contract, as well as all appropriate veterinary records.
  • Adoption Donation/Fee – We incur significant expenses to rescue each dog in our care, such as veterinary treatment & surgeries, food, shelter pull fees, transportation, etc. When you adopt a dog from Ma, Paws, & Me Pet Rescue, you aren’t “buying” a dog – your donation/fee not only goes toward the care of your adoptive dog, but helps to make it possible for us to further our mission in rescuing dogs and placing them into forever homes. Adoption donations/fees can be made with cash or check only.

All dogs listed on our website are currently available for adoption, and are seeking loving forever homes. When you are applying to adopt, please be considerate of our process, and we will do our best to communicate with you at an appropriate pace. We are 100% volunteer-run, but we will make every attempt to reply to all emails and phone calls within 24 hours. We understand that adopting a companion pet can be a very exciting and emotional process, but we ask that you please understand the importance of our process and respect our guidelines by recognizing the dog is not officially yours until the adoption has been approved and the contract has been signed. For this reason, we suggest you do not purchase supplies, or get any person (especially children) in your family overly excited until you have signed the adoption contract and the home visit has been completed. Remember, there are many factors that could affect whether or not the dog you have applied for is deemed the right fit for you, your family, and your home.

The decision to place one of our rescue dogs into an adoptive home is not one that we take lightly. We reserve the right to deny any application and may not disclose the reason for denial. We do not operate on a first-come, first-served basis, as it is our goal to find the absolute best fit for both our dog and the adoptive family. We often have multiple applications for the same adoptable dog. We will not disclose information about other potential adopters nor will we stop accepting applications on that dog until it has officially been adopted.

In the event that the adopter is no longer able or willing to care for the adopted dog, the adopter understands that the dog MUST be returned to Ma, Paws, & Me Pet Rescue. Please note that this is stipulated in the adoption contract and Ma, Paws, & Me Pet Rescue will take legal action should it become necessary.

All Ma, Paws, & Me Pet Rescue Adopted Dogs receive the following:

  • Spay/Neuter Surgery
  • Heartworm Test (and treatment, if positive)
  • Age-appropriate Vaccinations
  • Current on Flea & Tick Preventative (Frontline Plus or equivalent)

Please note that we are unable to make any guarantees of future health, temperament, size, or breed of your adopted dog. We do our absolute best to create safe & healthy environments for the dogs while in our care. We expect adopters to do the same.
